Ryan Lipes

Ryan Lipes focuses his practice on complex litigation, investigations, and sports law. Before joining Zonies Law, Ryan was senior counsel for a national sports organization and an Assistant District Attorney at the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office.

Ryan has experience conducting investigations and representing clients before government regulators and investigators. As a prosecutor, he investigated hundreds of crimes, from fraud and identity theft to sexual abuse and human trafficking. Since leaving government, he has managed the response to government investigations, including investigations from a state attorney general’s office, the Department of Justice, and the Government Accountability Office. He has overseen investigations into sexual abuse in sport, investigated employee misconduct, and prepared a CEO for a Senate hearing.

Ryan also has substantial experience litigating cases before judges, juries, and arbitrators. He prepares every case as if he will argue it to a jury—something he has successfully done many times.

Within sports, Ryan has drafted compliance policies for amateur sports organizations, helped draft successful legislation to protect amateur athletes, and filed an amicus brief relating to limitations on liability for individuals who report the abuse of amateur athletes in good faith.

Ryan also maintains an active pro bono practice and represents veterans in appeals before the Court of Appeals for Veterans Claims. Ryan earned his B.A. from Duke University and his law degree from Harvard. He is admitted in New York and Colorado.
