Hips & Medical Devices

Problems with many hip replacement devices have led to pain, recurring infections, limited mobility, tissue damage, and heavy metal toxicity. These injuries are related to a category of hip replacements known as “metal-on-metal” devices. In 2010, DePuy Orthopaedics issued a recall of some of its metal-on-metal hip replacement products.

These replacement devices used a metal ball inside a metal cup or sleeve to simulate the movement of the hip joint. Studies and testing of patients revealed that the metal-on-metal motion could rub shards or particles of the metals off the joint, allowing them to migrate into the body. There, they were causing a number of problems, including tissue damage, necrosis, and heavy metal poisoning, as well as severe pain and limited mobility.

Currently, companies like DePuy and other manufacturers of hip replacement devices are facing a number of lawsuits from patients who claim the implants are dangerously defective in ways that led to real and serious complications. Although some lawsuits have been resolved, others continue to be filed.

If you or a loved one have been injured by a metal-on-metal hip replacement device, Zonies Law may be able to help.
